Photograph, photonegative, and slide collection, [ca.1950-1965].

This collection documents the activities, employees, and services of the Ala. Dept. of Pensions and Security, ca.1950-1965. The responsibility of the agency was to unify welfare activities for the state and county governments by administering financial assistance, social services, the food stamp program, child and emergency welfare, child adoption, and child-care institutions. There are 235 photographs, 182 negatives, and 62 slides depicting agency employees at conferences, meetings, and work. Many of the prints show employees working directly with citizens or visiting their homes. Other prints show state citizens who were receiving financial assistance or services from the department. The homes and homesites of the citizens are often shown including photographs of everyday activities such as leisure, recreation, and gardening. Social service activities for the aged are depicted. Several photographs show various county welfare offices and a church through which the Dept. of Pensions and Security worked. All of the negatives have prints in the collection. The color slides document the same subjects as the prints. One box of slides specifically depicts the American Public Welfare Association Conference in Charleston, W.V., ca.1952. Most of the photographs were processed by Walker Printing Co. of Montgomery, Ala.
